China Threatens Internet Porn Merchants with Life

BEIJING (Reuters) - China has intensified its battle against Internet and mobile phone pornography by threatening distributors with life in prison, Xinhua news agency said. 

"Depending on the seriousness of the cases, the sentences range from living under compulsory surveillance, detainment, taking into custody by the police, to various terms of imprisonment and life imprisonment," Xinhua said.

Beijing has stepped up its battle against smut in recent weeks, saying it is worried that the easy access to such material on the Internet and elsewhere will have a bad effect on youth and society.

Under the latest crackdown, which started in July, authorities have shut down hundreds of Web sites and arrested more than 300 people.

The new penalties were laid out on Sunday in guidelines issued by China's Supreme People's Court and the office of the country's top prosecutor, Xinhua said.

A pornographic Web site that had been clicked on more than 250,000 times would be considered a "very severe" case that could warrant a life sentence for its producers, Xinhua said. It did not elaborate.

China's communist rulers have gradually relaxed the puritanical rule they imposed when they swept to power in 1949, but sporadically try to crack down on the sex industry and are particularly nervous about pornography on the Internet.

I wonder at what point China will concede it is impossible to stop the flow of porn in a modern Internet wired society?  Can they not see the genie is out of the bottle?  Also, I'd like to know more about the alleged "bad effects" of permitting adult entertainment.  To the best of my knowledge, said "bad effects" have never been demonstrated.  Plus, it seems to me, the countries with less restrictive free speech policies such as the U.S., Japan and Western Europe are the ones that have thrived.

Also, doesn't imposing a life sentence for running a porn site strike anyone as just a wee bit harsh?  A central tenant of Western criminal law is the concept of proportionality.  In other words, the punishment imposed must be in proportion to the crime committed.  A sentence that is too far out of line in the United States may be challenged under the 8th Amendment which prohibits "cruel and unusual punishment." 

I feel bad for the 300+ people who have been swept up so far in this ridiculous agenda of the government.  I suppose it's much easier to be out of touch with the people when you don't have to be held accountable at the polls.

FIELD REPORT

On the set of Barely 18 #13 (Part One)
Thousand Oaks, California, July 24, 2004

A little over a month ago I visited the set for the latest installment of Barely 18.  This series is Sin City's flagship teen line.  This was number thirteen in the series, but there was nothing unlucky about it.  Except for one girl who flaked the day before -- requiring the use of an emergency replacement, everything went exceedingly smooth at the shoot.  This series is mostly gonzo style, but there are very brief stories at the beginning (called vignettes) to give some context to the sex encounters that follow.  Barely 18 features starlets who are new to the industry and mostly 18 or 19 years old.  This episode was lensed outdoors at a serene estate in a rural area of Thousand Oaks.  Interestingly, the way this movie was shot, two distinct scenes were filmed in different areas of the estate at the same time using two directors.

It's certainly possible to argue pirate sales harm the bottom line of the studios, talent and everyone else who earns income from the adult industry. However, this is only true if the pirate discs actually substituted for a legitimate purchase. In other words, if you never would have bought those discs at regular price, it is an illusionary lost sale. Some people will simply never pay the full freight for porn (or music or software). In some cases, however, I'm sure a real sale is lost to piracy.

Also, there is the possibility that by purchasing the pirate discs, you will be exposed to porn you like and demand for the product could actually increase in the future. After all, you may not always be in the Far East where these bogus discs are readily available. If you suddenly get the hots for some Asian porn chick and you really want to see her again, are you going to wait until your next holiday or just spend $15 and buy the damm thing when new releases come out? You may also discover new studios/directors/girls/fetishes that you otherwise would not take a chance on at a higher price point. There is some evidence music sharing systems such as Napster did indeed stir demand for less popular and/or more obscure artists.

Morally, this is a different story and more clear cut. It's just wrong. It puts money into the pocket of thieves, not the hardworking people in the adult industry who produced the disc you are enjoying. I truly believe it is important to support the people who are giving us entertainment we enjoy. It is for this reason I often buy dvds that I enjoy even though I could get it for free or close to free. I even do this with Japanese import discs, which are quite expensive. I also purchase Hollywood movies, music CDs and software as a way to support the ones I like.

If no one supports the studios by actually buying legitimate product, the adult industry will no longer be profitable and people will support themselves in some other fashion. That is the last thing you want to happen as a fan. A lot of people working in the industry might consider porn a labor of love, but it's still a business. At the end of the day, people need a roof over their head and food on the table.

Also, as a final thought, piracy would probably affect a smaller studio more than a large one. The larger companies can absorb the losses easier because they move more product and have more varied income streams -- including extensive web revenue and sales to cable TV.

Oh the pressure to update!  So dear readers, I scoured the web for some fresh porn news and here's what I found:

First, the Sacramento Bee reports a long distance trucker, Steven Kelly, was charged in Federal Court with possession of child pornography after attempting to drop off two rolls of film at a Walmart store on August 14th in Woodland, California.  The trucker used an alias and requested one hour developing as well as a photo CD.  A store employee noticed that several photos "depicted a young girl wearing only underpants and in sexually suggestive poses."  The Walmart worker then alerted local authorities.  Shortly afterwards, the Woodland police  contacted the FBI.  

When questioned, Kelly told police the girl was his neice at first, but later admitted she was the 9 year old daughter of his girlfriend's sister.  The accused said he took the photos earlier this month in an Anaheim hotel while the girl slept on a trip to Disneyland. [How pathetic and twisted is that?!]  Kelly also told FBI investigators he had served time in an Arizona prison for five years in the early 1990's and had been trading child porn on the internet for five years.  A consentual search of Kelly's laptop uncovered over fifty child porn images and eight videos.  Kelly is being held without bail.

This sicko also sounds like a candidate for "America's Dumbest Criminals".

Second, a porn newsflash from Britian -- sixteen people were fired and over 200 government workers disciplined for porn related offenses in the Department of Work and Pensions.  Apparently, the staff downloaded over TWO MILLION pages of hardcore material in just eight months!  Damm -- that's a serious amount of slacking off and jerking off!  For more information on this scandal, click the following links:  Mirror.co.uk,  BBC News.

Third, the AP reports that California Assemblyman Paul Koretz (42nd District - Los Angeles) and Chairman of the California Labor and Employment Committee is calling for all porn performers to use condoms in adult movies.  The legislator recently sent a letter to 185 adult studios asking for voluntary compliance.  The letter threatened a legal mandate to use rubbers if producers do not go along with the request. 

In a press release, Koretz writes, "Passing a law will not necessarily result in more condom use in the industry, particularly if the mandate is seen as unworkable and drives adult production underground or out of state.  However, failure to adopt the harm reduction strategies recommended by Dr. Coates would be in my opinion, irresponsible and would invite the Legislature to exercise its authority to mandate more stringent actions."

In reaction, Lexington Steele, a popular male porn star and now producer was quoted as saying, "I don't think it's the place of the authorities to decide whether [talent] are to use condoms or not."

Hmmmm, does that make any sense to push for passage of a law that will not achieve the stated purpose? -- unless of course, Koretz's true motivation is simply to drive the porn industry to another state.  What a blow to the San Fernando Valley economy if that happens!

FIELD REPORT

On the set of Interracial Addiction #04 (Part Two)
Woodland Hills, California, July 02, 2004

As promised here's part two of my Interracial Addiction #04 field report.  Amazingly, the guys at NJ Films have already edited this movie and finished the post production touches.  I received a screener of the final retail version just the other day in the mail!  Here's what the front box cover looks like.  Kylie Rey is in the top right corner!  Below are some more exclusive photos from Kylie's shoot!

 

In this first photo, I mainly just wanted to show you guys what the set looked like.  This picture was taken at the start of the scene.  Rick Masters is warming Kylie up for the action to come.  As you can see, this scene was filmed in the living room of a residence.  This is a relatively simple lighting setup that used three or four fixtures with umbrellas.  The umbrellas are used to diffuse the light source and make the video footage look softer.  The guy with the camera is "Director Dick".  He's shooting this video using a classic Sony VX1000 mini-dv camcorder.  Dick said he is a fan of Sony products.

Next Kylie gave Rick a blowjob and then they moved on to a hot sex romp in a bunch of positions.  First up was standard missionary followed by doggy style and cowgirl (both regular and reverse).  Here's a few shots where I tried to capture the heat of the moment!

A few weeks ago I met up with a couple of guys on my APH discussion board in porn valley ... Here's a photo of Jag, Cougar and I having a power dinner at P.F. Chang's in Woodland Hills. Chang's serves traditional Chinese food with a "contemporary" spin.



Cougar made a move on the hostess, but sadly, he didn't get any play. After that, I was worried Guido was going to be our food server, but instead God shined his light on us and sent a really cute, twinkie Waitress! That was a sign! I pretty much liked all the food. This was the first time Cougar and I had been there. Jag was an old pro.

Although that was a lot of food, the sexy waitress talked us into dessert. I tried the Banana Spring Rolls (yummy!) and Cougar ordered New York Style Cheesecake. Jag tried the dessert of the night -- some sort of peach crumb cake I believe.

Anyway, it was a fun time and we all agreed we should do it again!
